Payments

To start accepting payments using the Razorpay Payment Gateway, you must create and activate an account with Razorpay. Refer to the Create an Account section in the Dashboard Guide for more information.

Once your account is activated, you can start accepting payments from your customers. However, the payments will be settled to your account only after your KYC is verified. Refer to the Settlements section for more information.

Payment Life Cycle#

Created#

A payment is created when the customer fills up and submits the payment information and it is sent to Razorpay. No processing has been done on the payment at this stage.

Authorized#

Authorization is performed when customer's payment details are successfully authenticated by the bank. The money is deducted from the customer’s account by Razorpay, but will not be settled to your account until the payment is captured, either manually or automatically.

There can be scenarios when a payment is interrupted by external factors such as network issues or technical errors at customer's or bank's end. In such cases, money may get debited from the customer's bank account but Razorpay does not receive a payment status from the bank. This is termed as Late Authorization and you can learn more about how to handle this at your end.

Captured#

When the status of the payment is changed to captured, the authorized payment is verified as complete by Razorpay. After the capture, the amount is settled to your account as per the settlement schedule of the bank. The captured amount must be the same as the authorized amount. Any authorization not followed by a capture within 5 days is automatically voided and the amount is refunded to the customer.

Refunded#

You can refund the payments that have been successfully captured at your end. The amount is sent back to the customer's account.

Failed#

Any unsuccessful transaction is marked as failed and the customer will have to retry the payment.

  1. How would a customer make a payment? Is there a demo I can check out?

    Sure! You can try out a demo here.

    Note: This is a real transaction. Money will be deducted from your account when you complete the transaction. The money will be auto-refunded to your account in 4-5 days.

  2. Is GST mandatory in order to accept payments?
    #

    No, GST is not mandatory if your business does not have an annual turnover of over ₹20 lakhs. However, if you do not provide your GST details, you would not be able to claim TDS at the time of filing returns.

  3. How can I test my integration? Do you offer a sandbox environment?
    #

    You can test the your integration using test mode. This is a sandbox environment offered by Razorpay. To test your integration, generate test API Keys in the test mode and implement them in your code.

  4. Do you have any test cards that I can use to check my integration?
    #

    Yes we do. Below is a list of cards that can be used to inspect the payment flow with the available payment methods. Use any CVV and any future date as the expiry date.

  5. What is auto-capture? How do I enable auto-capture for payments?

    When a customer makes a payment, it goes to the authorized state. You need to capture such payments for them to be settled to your account. Auto-capture enables the payments to be captured automatically as soon as they are authorized. Payments that are authorized, but not captured are automatically refunded in 5 days.

    To set up automatic capture of payments, you must set up Payment Capture settings on your Razorpay Dashboard.

  7. Can I accept International Payments through Razorpay?

    Yes. Razorpay allows eligible businesses to accept payments through cards issued by any overseas bank. Refer to our International Payments document for more details.

  8. How are payments made by my customers settled to my account? Is it a manual process? Do I need to do something?
    #

    Settlements are completely automated. There is no need for manual intervention. The captured payments would be settled to your account as per your settlement cycle. Refer to our Settlement documentation for more details.

  9. A payment is marked as failed on my Dashboard but money is debited from the customer’s account. What do I do?
    #

    A payment is said to be in the failed state when we do not receive a successful callback message on the transaction from the issuing bank. If the customer’s account is debited and we do not receive a successful callback, the amount will be auto-refunded by the customer’s issuing bank in 7-10 working days. In case of a failed payment, we verify the status with the bank at regular intervals. If there is a change in status, the payment moves to the authorized state and a notification is sent to you and the customer. In such scenarios, you may choose to do one of the following:

    • Provide services: You may capture the payment and provide the service/good that was promised earlier to the customer.
    • Refund the transaction: Since you would not be in a position to provide service to the customer at the agreed terms (could be the time of delivery, cost of purchase or inventory issues) you may have to refund the payment to the customer.
  10. Is Razorpay PCI DSS compliant?
