E- Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN)

TAN or Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric code issued by the Income Tax Department for tracking tax deducted at source (TDS) and tax collected at source (TCS) by entities, under the Income Tax Act, 1961.

Under Section 203A of the Income Tax Department, It is required by all entities including individuals, companies, firms, etc. which are liable to deduct or collect tax at source.

Format of a TAN

TAN is a 10-Digit alphanumeric number where each character denotes either the jurisdiction or acts as an unique identifier. Here is the typical format:

ABC D 12345 E

In the above example-

  • The first three letters represent the state or city where TAN is issued. Here ABC can be BLR for Bangalore, DLI for Delhi, etc.
  • The fourth letter is the initial of the Organization i.e. Tax Deductor. For example, here, ‘D’ is the initial of the Tax Deductor.
  • The next five numerals are system generated and act as an unique identification number.
  • The last character is a system-generated Alphabet, also known as Check Digit. Here, it is ‘E’.

If the TAN does not adhere to the structure outlined above, it will be considered invalid.

How to apply for TAN?

Through SPICe+ Application

For newly incorporated entities, the e-TAN is issued upon the submission of the exhaustive forms like SPICe+ Part A and Part B. The Certificate of Incorporation, containing the 10-digit TAN, is then provided via email as confirmation of the successful company registration process.

Through NSDL-TIN

TIN or Tax Information Network is a framework established by National Securities Depository Limited to facilitate the electronic processing of tax-related information and the issuance of Permanent Account Numbers (PAN) and Tax Deduction and Collection Number (TAN) in India.

To apply for TAN online, follow these steps:

  • Go to the official NSDL-TIN website.
  • Complete Form 49B, providing necessary details and attaching required identity and address proofs.
  • Submit the form after ensuring the accuracy of the displayed information.
  • Upon confirmation, an acknowledgment screen will show a 14-digit acknowledgment number, applicant's name and status, contact details, etc.
  • The Income Tax Department verifies and approves the application, notifying NSDL, which subsequently issues the TAN.
