What is a Letter of Recommendation?

A letter of recommendation is a formal document written by a former employer highlighting the skillset, accomplishments, and general credentials of an employee.

When an employee switches jobs and finds a new organisation, the new employer may want someone from the previous organisation(s) to vouch for credentials. A recommendation letter can also be a part of a cover letter and resume while applying to new jobs.

The purpose of this letter is to build credibility for the new employer who can assess your candidacy for the new role you have applied for.

Writing an effective and well-crafted letter of recommendation reflects on an employer as well.

You may consider the below tips to write a good letter of recommendation for your employee, depending on their request:

  1. Always use a business format, to write the letter. Ensure that the subject line speaks of the intent of the letter. Mention the date and include relevant information.
  2. Describe your authority and the relationship with the candidate you are writing the letter for. The recipient must understand the relationship to trust the insight you will be sharing on the candidate’s work skills.
  3. Mention the candidate’s accomplishments and how they have contributed to the growth of the team. This shows the candidate’s professional skillset along with the ability to go the extra mile.
  4. You may also include specific examples to illustrate their qualities as relating to a real-life scenario will be easier for the other person.
  5. Conclude the letter of recommendation with a formal closing.

Please note that the language should be purely professional and do not include any criticism of the employee in the letter.
