{"id":27929,"date":"2026-09-25T15:02:42","date_gmt":"2026-09-25T09:32:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/blog\/?p=27929"},"modified":"2026-09-25T15:03:29","modified_gmt":"2026-09-25T09:33:29","slug":"pf-wage-ceiling-is-now-%e2%82%b925000-what-employers-need-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/razorpay.com\/payroll\/pf-wage-ceiling-is-now-%e2%82%b925000-what-employers-need-to-know\/","title":{"rendered":"PF Wage Ceiling is now \u20b925,000: What employers need to know?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PF wage ceiling has changed for the first time in more than a decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From <\/span><b>17 September 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the wage ceiling for mandatory EPFO coverage has increased from <\/span><b>\u20b915,000 to \u20b925,000 per month<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you manage payroll, you\u2019re probably wondering: <\/span><b>Who does this affect, and what do I need to change?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a simple breakdown.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What exactly has changed?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until now, the PF wage ceiling was \u20b915,000 per month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is now \u20b925,000 per month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means more employees can now come under mandatory EPFO coverage, which includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPF, or provident fund savings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPS, or pension benefits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EDLI, or employee-linked insurance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The contribution rate itself has not changed. What has changed is the wage ceiling used to decide coverage and calculate contributions in applicable cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Who is likely to be affected?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The easiest way to understand this is to look at employees in three groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Employees earning between \u20b915,000 and \u20b925,000 who were not covered earlier<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the group most directly affected by the change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employees who were outside mandatory PF coverage because their applicable wages were above the earlier \u20b915,000 ceiling may now need to be covered if their wages fall within the new \u20b925,000 ceiling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these employees, PF deductions may start appearing in payroll.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Employees already contributing to PF, but with contributions capped at \u20b915,000<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some existing PF members, contributions may currently be calculated on the earlier ceiling of \u20b915,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For affected employees, that contribution base can now go up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if an employee has PF wages of \u20b920,000:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier, a 12% employee contribution on \u20b915,000 would be <\/span><b>\u20b91,800<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the revised ceiling, a 12% contribution on \u20b920,000 would be <\/span><b>\u20b92,400<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means an additional \u20b9600 would go towards the employee\u2019s PF contribution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the full \u20b925,000 ceiling, the employee contribution can go up to <\/span><b>\u20b93,000 per month<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Employees already contributing on wages above \u20b925,000<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these employees, there may not be a direct change to the employee PF contribution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The impact will depend on how PF contributions are already being calculated for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why the new \u20b925,000 ceiling should <\/span><b>not be applied as a blanket amount to every employee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Will employees see a change in take-home salary?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some employees may. If an employee\u2019s PF contribution increases, their monthly take-home salary may reduce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if an employee moves from a contribution calculated on \u20b915,000 to one calculated on \u20b925,000:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee PF contribution:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Earlier: \u20b91,800<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>Now: \u20b93,000<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is a difference of <\/span><b>\u20b91,200 per month<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this will not apply to everyone. The actual impact will depend on the employee\u2019s PF wages, existing PF membership and the contribution method followed by the employer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The additional amount also goes towards the employee\u2019s social-security benefits. It is not an additional tax or fee.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What does this mean for employers?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two things to keep in mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, you may need to update PF coverage and contributions for some employees. Second, your employer contribution may also increase for affected employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So it is worth checking both the payroll impact and the overall cost impact for your organisation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>September needs a little extra attention<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is one unusual part of this change: it came into effect on <\/span><b>17 September 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the middle of the month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means September cannot necessarily be treated like a regular payroll month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payroll teams will need to account for the transition from the earlier \u20b915,000 ceiling to the new \u20b925,000 ceiling and follow the latest EPFO guidance while preparing the September ECR and remittance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you use <a href=\"https:\/\/razorpay.com\/payroll\/?r=blog_pf_wage_ceiling\">RazorpayX Payroll<\/a>, you do not need to figure this out alone.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are tracking the latest implementation guidance and will share clear steps with you as the required changes are rolled out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What should you do now?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For now, it is useful to identify:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employees whose PF wages fall between \u20b915,000 and \u20b925,000;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employees whose PF contributions are currently capped at \u20b915,000;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employees who may now need to be enrolled under EPFO; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any changes this could make to take-home salary or employer costs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may also want to inform affected employees before they see a change in their payslip.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What RazorpayX Payroll is doing<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are closely tracking the new PF requirements and the related EPFO guidance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As soon as the required changes are live on RazorpayX Payroll, <\/span><b>we\u2019ll let you know and share the steps you need to follow<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our goal is to make this transition as simple as possible and help you stay compliant without adding unnecessary work to your payroll process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Last updated: 24 September 2026<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article is intended to help employers understand the PF wage-ceiling change.
