UPI, since its inception, has become quite the champion amongst payment modes. Anybody and everybody who accept payments, are now providing UPI as a default payment mode. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, if you\u2019re wondering what UPI has to offer in September, you\u2019re in for a treat! Without further ado, let\u2019s discuss UPI, the most preferred payment mode in India!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we get into the details, let\u2019s bounce off of the different types of UPI payments and their significance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the use-cases for UPI payments are bountiful, we primarily use the payment mode for <\/span><b>two kinds of payments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>P2P (Person to Person)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; UPI was initially a <a href=\"https:\/\/razorpay.com\/blog\/what-are-p2p-payments\/\">P2P payments<\/a> enabler in 2017, meant for transactions between two people<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>P2M (Person to Merchant)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; After it took the payments space by a storm, it transitioned into a P2M mode, wherein people could make payments through UPI to merchants, both online and offline<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Razorpay is a payments platform, it oversees P2M transactions from a multitude of businesses like <\/span><b>BookMyShow<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>IRCTC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Zomato<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to name a few. To better represent the efficacy of the transactions, we\u2019re considering P2M transactions of UPI alone carried out on the Razorpay platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>UPI vs other payment modes\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first time ever, UPI went past cards and other popular modes to become the most preferred payment mode in the month of September!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2056 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/UPI-vs-Other-payment-mode-1.png\" alt=\"UPI methodwise contribution preferred payment mode\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/UPI-vs-Other-payment-mode-1.png 2048w, https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/UPI-vs-Other-payment-mode-1-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/UPI-vs-Other-payment-mode-1-1024x512.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/UPI-vs-Other-payment-mode-1-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/UPI-vs-Other-payment-mode-1-1536x768.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve been observing UPI transactions since 2017, and we always saw that cards (debit &amp; credit) took the bigger chunk in the method-wise split, while UPI always stood right behind cards. But, the tables turned in September.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UPI contributed to about <\/span><b>45%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the total transactions we observed at Razorpay, while cards pitched in <\/span><b>42.56%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taking the second place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may think the difference is minuscule. But, with 350,000+ businesses on the platform, you can only imagine the number of transactions taking place every minute, every day. So, the 2% difference is a big deal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As much as people love swiping cards, the ease of simply not carrying cards anymore took precedence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netbanking summed up a total of <\/span><b>9.29%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as wallets superseded bank transfers by <\/span><b>0.38%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How UPI became the preferred payment mode<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/razorpay.com\/blog\/upi-data-august-2019\/\">August month\u2019s issue<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we talked about UPI\u2019s adoption skyrocketing. And, it\u2019s no different this time either!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The growth of UPI is always an interesting trend to stay updated with. We\u2019ve seen the numbers vary across ranges and extremities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The payment mode is truly an innovation in fintech since it has been able to simplify payments like never before. Keeping the month of April as the base value (calculated upon values of previous months), we can see that there has been sustained growth in the overall transactional value, as well as volume.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although May was an anomaly for various reasons, UPI managed to brush off the dust and swing right in from August, while discovering a new crest in September.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By <\/span><b>37.33%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, UPI went through the roof in September,<\/span><b> for the first time ever<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next up, let\u2019s take a look at how some of our favourite UPI apps did in September.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>App-wise contribution<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since UPI was the biggest player in terms of payment mode, it\u2019s only right we understand how much of a contribution each one of our popular UPI apps bore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2050 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/App-wise-contribution-3.png\" alt=\"app wise contribution preferred payment mode\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/App-wise-contribution-3.png 2048w, https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/App-wise-contribution-3-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/App-wise-contribution-3-1024x512.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/App-wise-contribution-3-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/App-wise-contribution-3-1536x768.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As always, the Google Pay drift continued as the app furnished a hefty <\/span><b>61.33%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the total UPI transactions there were carried out in September. PhonePe too, without changing its spot, followed Google Pay by handing out <\/span><b>24.2%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contributions of PayTM (<\/span><b>5.94%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and BHIM (<\/span><b>4.55%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) saw a steady number, around the ballpark of the last few months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UPI apps of banks (constituting \u201cothers\u201d) like Syndicate Pay, Kotak Mahindra, and more, along with Mobikwik, Airtel Payments Bank, Amazon Pay, accounted for a total of <\/span><b>2.45%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like UPI, UPI apps have also seen variations in growth. Some of the apps have seen a consistent rise, while others have fallen back. You can read all about it in our <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/razorpay.com\/blog\/the-upi-wars-whos-the-boss\/\">UPI Wars story<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s see what tug-of-war went on in September.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The evolution of UPI apps<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2053 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/UPI-App-wise-growth.png\" alt=\"app wise growth\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/UPI-App-wise-growth.png 2048w, https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/UPI-App-wise-growth-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/UPI-App-wise-growth-1024x512.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/UPI-App-wise-growth-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/UPI-App-wise-growth-1536x768.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We analyzed a high value and volume of UPI transactions to determine the growth of each UPI app, and the results were quite satisfying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Pay, although the most used, adopted app, still saw a massive growth of <\/span><b>40.77%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while PayTM jumped up the ladder from August to <\/span><b>37.8%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And, PhonePe contended to claim its place at <\/span><b>34.01<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this war continued, BHIM silently made its way up by <\/span><b>31.17<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bank UPI apps like SBI (<\/span><b>20.66%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), HDFC (<\/span><b>11.1%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and ICICI (<\/span><b>10.38%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) made the list by showing significant growth. Samsung Pay, ICICI Pockets, Mobikwik, <a href=\"https:\/\/razorpay.com\/blog\/razorpay-payments-on-whatsapp-business\/\">WhatsApp Pay<\/a>, Andhra Bank, and more (grouped as \u201cothers)\u201d, also caught up by a total of <\/span><b>20.15%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>UPI transactions from across the country<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that we\u2019re fully aware of the growth of UPI and UPI apps, let\u2019s dive into some geographical specifications to understand where these transactions came from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2051 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/State-wise-UPI-contributions.png\" alt=\"preferred payment mode - upi transactions from across the country\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/State-wise-UPI-contributions.png 2048w, https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/State-wise-UPI-contributions-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/State-wise-UPI-contributions-1024x512.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/State-wise-UPI-contributions-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.razorpay.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/State-wise-UPI-contributions-1536x768.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we\u2019ve worked on the UPI series for a few months now, we had a few predictions about the states and cities\u2019 contributions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karnataka, as always, was the #1 contributor of UPI payments in September, as <\/span><b>28.42%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the total UPI transactions were carried out in the state. While so, Maharashtra retained its place just after Karnataka at <\/span><b>14.51<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Telangana and Andhra Pradesh collectively saw <\/span><b>10.48<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">% of the total UPI transactions, and the NCR region contributed <\/span><b>8.77<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, let\u2019s jump into the <\/span><b>contribution of cities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our August month\u2019s report, Bangalore gobbled up the first place, and the same went on in September as the city pitched in <\/span><b>39%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of UPI transactions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyderabad also had a significant number of transactions (<\/span><b>12.3%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) just like Pune (<\/span><b>9.4%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Mumbai made its name on the list for the first time at (<\/span><b>7.1%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) followed by Chennai at (<\/span><b>6.1%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Note: You may wonder how Karnataka\u2019s contribution is 28.42% while Bangalore is 39%. The reason is, the state split is different from the city split.
