It has the same value as physical money, with 1 digital rupee equaling Rs. 1 cash.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The retail e-rupee \u2013 or the Central Bank Digital Currency-retail (CBDC-R) \u2013 is essentially a digital version of cash. It is legal tender issued by the Central Bank but in electronic form. The e-rupee is issued in the same denominations as currently available banknotes and coins. You can use the digital rupee for transactions via a <a href=\"https:\/\/razorpay.com\/blog\/digital-wallet\/\">digital wallet<\/a> or UPI. It can be used to carry out transactions, store value digitally, and and make several form of payments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E-rupee is available in the electronic form and works as a prepaid voucher sent to the beneficiary\u2019s mobile phone as an SMS or a QR code. The beneficiary can redeem the voucher at any merchant that accepts UPI e-prepaid vouchers without using a card, a digital payment app or Internet banking. The voucher is authorised by a verification code shared by the beneficiary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E-rupee was launched to promote digital payments and reduce dependence on physical currency. To use e-rupee, you need a digital payment system that supports it. This can be a <a href=\"https:\/\/razorpay.com\/learn\/mobile-wallet\/\">mobile wallet<\/a> app or a <a href=\"https:\/\/razorpay.com\/payment-gateway\/\">payment gateway<\/a> integrated into your website or app.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Buy_RBI_Digital_e%E2%82%B9_E-Rupee\"><\/span><b>How to Buy RBI Digital e\u20b9 (E-Rupee)?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>RBI, or the Central Bank of India, has selected eight banks to take part in the phase-wise e-rupee pilot programme<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the first phase, State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank, and IDFC First Bank will comprise the first phase in the four Indian cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, New Delhi, and Bhubaneswar.<\/p>\n<p>In the second phase, Four other banks &#8211; Union Bank of India, HDFC Bank, Bank of Baroda and Kotak Mahindra Bank, will join the pilot.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Visit the participating bank&#8217;s official app or website<\/li>\n<li>Register to use the e-rupee wallet<\/li>\n<li>Banks will inform you when you are selected for the Closed User Group (CUG) via SMS and email to participate in the digital rupee pilot programme.<\/li>\n<li>After the registration, load money into the e\u20b9-R wallet. The e\u20b9-R wallet is similar to a physical wallet but is in digital form on your phone.<\/li>\n<li>You can load money into the e\u20b9-R wallet from the account linked to the bank or from various UPI apps.<\/li>\n<li>Once you load money into the wallet, you can start transacting in e-rupee.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Note that the e-rupee is a digital version of your cash or paper money and is not a cryptocurrency. You can make transactions using QR codes displayed at shops or malls to pay with an e-rupee.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Use_Digital_E-Rupee_in_India\"><\/span><b>How to Use Digital E-Rupee in India?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>The RBI issues the retail digital rupee as an electronic token.<\/li>\n<li>A closed user group (CUG) consists of participating merchants and customers. The e-pilot cover selected cities in the closed user group (CUG)<\/li>\n<li>The e-rupee will be issued in the same denominations, followed by paper currency or coins. It is a digital token That will be distributed through banks as an intermediary.<\/li>\n<li>Your bank will offer a digital wallet that you can use on your smartphones for online transactions of e-rupee.<\/li>\n<li>Both person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions can be done using QR codes displayed at malls or shops.<\/li>\n<li>e\u20b9-R comes with all features of physical cash like safety, settlement finality, trust, etc. despite being a digital currency.<\/li>\n<li>You can convert the digital rupee into other forms of money like bank deposits.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_was_the_Digital_E-rupee_Introduced\"><\/span><b>Why was the Digital E-rupee Introduced?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The RBI, in its concept document, mentioned a few principal motivations for introducing the digital rupee &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reducing the cost associated with physical cash management (printing, storage, transportation, etc.).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing the adoption of digital payments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supporting financial inclusion (especially via the &#8216;Offline&#8217; feature in remote parts of the country with poor connectivity).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providing Indians with a safe digital currency without any of the risks associated with cryptocurrency.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_can_Use_Digital_E-rupee\"><\/span><b>Who can Use Digital E-rupee?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital e-rupee is especially useful for government agencies and regulatory bodies, as it enables them to provide welfare benefits and subsidies to the intended beneficiaries transparently and efficiently. e-RUPI also ensures that the funds are used for the specific purpose or activity for which they are issued, thus preventing leakage and corruption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also use e-RUPI for personal or business transactions, such as buying goods and services, paying bills, or booking tickets.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_is_E-rupee_Different_from_UPI\"><\/span><b>How is E-rupee Different from UPI?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the motivations behind launching a digital currency is to reduce settlement risk in the system. In the case of <a href=\"https:\/\/razorpay.com\/upi\/\">UPI transactions<\/a>, the transfer of money involves a settlement process, where you place a request with your bank, and the funds are then deducted from your account and transferred to the beneficiary\u2019s account.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But with e-rupee transfers, there is no intermediary. It is the electronic equivalent of handing cash over to another person. The money is never &#8216;in transit&#8217;, nor is there any need for inter-bank settlement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The e-rupees are simply transferred from one wallet to another, and the funds become the property of the receiving party; this is the concept of &#8216;settlement finality&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Does_E-rupee_Mean_for_Users\"><\/span><b>What Does E-rupee Mean for Users?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the digital rupee, we could be looking at a whole new era of convenience in digital payments. Transferring funds will be the literal equivalent of handing cash over, totally instantaneous. <a href=\"https:\/\/rbi.org.in\/Scripts\/PublicationReportDetails.aspx?UrlPage=&amp;ID=1218\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The RBI has even mentioned an &#8216;Offline&#8217; feature<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, allowing transactions to occur even without a mobile network. This is especially beneficial for remote areas, where the penetration of digital payments has suffered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A digital currency would reduce the dependence on cash and reduce fraud in digital transactions. The government could use the e-rupee to improve the mechanism of directly transferring funds to beneficiaries of schemes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One feature of physical cash transactions is anonymity: there is no digital trail.
