Built on device-bound secure biometrics and payment passkey protocols, Razorpay now enables cardholders to authenticate online card transactions promptly using biometrics such as fingerprint or facial recognition, eliminating dependence on OTPs and delivering a more secure, faster, and reliable checkout experience.

Your customers can now:

  • Discover effortlessly
  • Decide faster
  • Place orders seamlessly
  • Authenticate payments using fingerprint or face scan

India, with its rapidly expanding payment ecosystem and advanced tokenization market, is embracing payment passkeys and enhanced biometric authentication in line with the Reserve Bank of India’s goal for a safer, more resilient payment system. Payment passkeys aren’t just about speed and convenience,  they’re about safety and enhancing a user’s shopping experience. For businesses, it means fewer abandoned carts and less fraud. For shoppers, by replacing traditional passwords and OTPs, they accelerate checkout while reducing the risk of credential loss, misuse, or exposure, improving both convenience and security for customers.

This enables:

  • No OTP entry
  • No redirections
  • No manual steps
  • No session breakage

What changes is the experience. Most importantly, security remains deterministic, compliant,  powered by Razorpay infrastructure in partnership with Mastercard & VISA.

Our Journey to Biometric Card Authentication at Scale

Our journey to redefine authentication didn’t begin today.

It’s been built, step by step, towards a faster, more seamless, and more secure future of payments.

2024 :  Laying the foundation – At Global Fintech Fest, in partnership with Mastercard, we showcased a live proof-of-concept of biometric card authentication using passkeys – moving beyond OTPs for the first time.

Ravi Datla, Senior Vice President, Customer Solutions, South Asia, Mastercard, said, “At Mastercard, we believe that the future of digital payments lies in authentication that is not only secure, but effortless for consumers and businesses alike. As the first payments network to introduce passkey-based authentication in India, we are glad to collaborate with Razorpay to help move the ecosystem beyond OTP dependency. Biometric, device-bound authentication marks a critical shift, one that strengthens trust, enhances security, and reflects the direction set by India’s regulator. Together, we are enabling a safer, more reliable digital payments experience that works at the speed and scale of the country’s growing digital economy.”

2025 :  From innovation to infrastructure –  As RBI’s two-factor authentication regulations came into force, we moved early, launching native ACS infrastructure designed to support biometric authentication at scale within 10 days, securely and compliantly.

2026 :  Bringing it into real-world commerce –  At the AI Impact Summit, in partnership with Mastercard and Tira Beauty, Razorpay heralded the shift into the AI era of commerce, enabling biometric card authentication within live journeys and proving this isn’t just possible, but practical.

And, today: Proud to bring both networks together – Mastercard and Visa, in enabling this shift to continue shaping what comes next for payments in India.

Ramakrishnan Gopalan, Head of Product, India & South Asia, Visa, said, “As digital commerce scales in India, authentication must be both stronger and simpler. Visa Payment Passkey is designed to move the ecosystem beyond OTP dependent flows by enabling secure, device-bound, biometric authentication that is fast, seamless, and fully aligned with RBI’s two-factor authentication framework. Our partnership with Razorpay reflects Visa’s commitment to advancing trusted, inclusive, friction-free payments that improve success rates for merchants while giving consumers greater confidence and control at checkouts.”

Why This Matters

The world is moving faster than ever – and payments need to keep up.
For decades, commerce followed a predictable choreography:
Search. Select. Enter details. Wait for OTPs. Complete.

We optimized every step, but the experience remained fragmented, built on redirects, manual inputs, and interruptions at the moment that matters most: payment.

Today, expectations have changed. Speed is instant. Experiences are seamless. Decisions happen in seconds. But authentication hasn’t caught up. OTPs often add an extra step at checkout, introducing delays and moments of friction that can interrupt an otherwise seamless flow.

To match the pace of modern commerce, authentication needed to evolve, from something your customers enter, to something they are.

Now, when your customer places an order, they can authenticate high-value card payments instantly, with just a fingerprint or face scan. No OTP friction. No redirects.  Faster checkouts, Higher success rates, Stronger security, and 100% compliant!

A simple, secure moment: Intent → Biometric confirmation → Payment complete

Card Authentication Built for What’s Next

Razorpay continues to be first as payment industry keeps innovating. With the ever changing world of AI Commerce in the future, authentication needs to match the experience: OTP-driven verification serves its purpose in interface-based transactions. However, conversational commerce requires authentication that is, faster, context-preserving, equally secure, and user-friendly. Biometric passkey authentication satisfies these requirements while maintaining strong identity assurance,  making it suited for native journeys, while also supporting AI-assisted environments.

Khilan Haria, Chief Product Officer, Razorpay, said, “Authentication should not slow down commerce; it should enable it. With biometric authentication powered by passkeys and built in partnership with Mastercard and Visa, we are eliminating one of the biggest friction points in digital payments. This solution not only strengthens security and ensures full RBI compliance but also unlocks higher success rates and better customer experiences for businesses. Our goal is to make authentication instant, invisible, and built for the next decade of AI-driven and mobile-first commerce.”

Today,

The future of Commerce is AI.
The future of Authentication is Biometrics.

And, Razorpay is powering  BOTH.
